Stone Sculpture
The original distinction between sculpture and plastic art is hardly applicable anymore in contemporary art production, as there are often overlaps between the two concepts in the works.
Unlike applying material—as is the case, for example, when sculpting with clay—in this course we will arrive at a form by carving away the stone. Over the course of this two-week process, participants will discover that, despite its resistance, stone is a highly malleable material with which they can develop their own form of expression. To achieve this, it is necessary to consider the time frame during the ideation process—whether figurative or abstract—to ensure the sculpture is feasible. The stones will be sized so that we can move them by hand. The individual steps and the use of tools—from rough cutting and carving to fine sanding—will be taught based on the specific situation.
